Shilajit Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Shilajit against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: shilajit, a mineral-rich resinous substance used in Ayurvedic medicine. The tablet also includes inactive ingredients (organic rice flour and silicon dioxide) as binders and fillers.
Does it work?
No specific claim
The evidence for shilajit's effectiveness for the conditions studied — Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, athletic performance, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), and osteopenia (low bone density) — is insufficient to make a reliable rating. We don't have enough high-quality data on file to say whether it works for these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Shilajit is generally well tolerated, though a rare case of severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) and isolated reports of headache exist. A critical caution: unpurified products may contain heavy metals or other harmful contaminants, so use only purified, tested brands like this one.
Avoid shilajit during pregnancy — there isn't enough safety data, and contamination risk makes it unsafe. Avoid it while breastfeeding as well; safety data is lacking.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking this product if you use any antidiabetes drugs — shilajit may lower your blood sugar further and raise the risk of hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar). These interactions span 85 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula marketed for general wellness rather than one specific gradeable purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Shilajit may be worth considering if you're interested in its traditional uses, but the scientific evidence on file is limited. If you take diabetes medication, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it — the interaction with blood sugar control is real.
Always choose a purified, tested brand, and avoid it if you're pregnant or nursing.

Shilajit by Banyan Botanicals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Shilajit by Banyan Botanicals interacts with antidiabetes drugs — the main concern is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Research shows shilajit can lower fasting blood sugar levels on its own, and when combined with diabetes medications like metformin or glibenclamide, it may enhance their glucose-lowering effect, raising the risk that your blood sugar drops too far.

Shilajit
Antidiabetes Drugs
Taking shilajit with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Most human and animal research shows that shilajit can decrease fasting plasma glucose levels. In an animal model, shilajit 100 mg per kg daily enhanced the glucose-lowering ability of both glibenclamide and metformin when given in combination over a 4 week period. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
