Shilajit Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Shilajit against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: shilajit, a mineral-rich substance traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. The tablet also includes inactive ingredients (rice flour and silicon dioxide) as binders and anti-caking agents.
Shilajit itself is a complex material—research shows it contains fulvic acid and trace minerals. Because shilajit can vary in purity and may pick up heavy metals or other contaminants depending on where it comes from and how it's processed, the facts here stress using only purified, tested brands like this one.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that shilajit works reliably for Alzheimer's disease, sexual dysfunction, athletic performance, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), or osteoporosis. All of these have been studied, but the research is too limited or inconsistent to rate them as effective.
If you're considering shilajit for any of these reasons, talk with your doctor about what the current science actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Shilajit is generally well tolerated in the doses studied. Rarely, headache has been reported.
One case of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) was documented in a woman taking shilajit, especially after physical activity—an unusual response, but a real one to be aware of. A case of high blood pressure related to mineral imbalances was also reported during pregnancy use, though shilajit's exact role couldn't be confirmed.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy. Breastfeeding safety is unknown, so it's best avoided then too.
Because unpurified shilajit can carry heavy metals and other contaminants, only use purified, tested brands.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take any antidiabetes drug—including metformin, insulin, glibenclamide, or other blood sugar–lowering medications—check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting shilajit. It may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with these medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Shilajit may be worth considering if you're interested in traditional mineral supplements, but we don't yet have solid evidence it works for common purposes like memory, sexual function, or bone health. The main caution is if you take a blood sugar–lowering medication—you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first because shilajit can lower blood sugar further.
Avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and stick to purified, tested products only.

Shilajit by Banyan Botanicals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Shilajit by Banyan Botanicals can interact with antidiabetes drugs.
Its main concern is a moderate-severity risk: taking it with blood sugar–lowering medications (antidiabetes drugs) might increase your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Research in animals shows shilajit can enhance how strongly drugs like metformin and glibenclamide lower glucose, which means the combination could drop your blood sugar further than either one alone.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 86 individual medications. Because shilajit may add to the glucose-lowering effect of your diabetes medication, if you take any antidiabetes drug—whether insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, or another class—check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before you start.

Shilajit
Antidiabetes Drugs
Taking shilajit with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Most human and animal research shows that shilajit can decrease fasting plasma glucose levels. In an animal model, shilajit 100 mg per kg daily enhanced the glucose-lowering ability of both glibenclamide and metformin when given in combination over a 4 week period. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
