Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Tru-Fulvic Shilajit extract at 100 mg per capsule. Shilajit is a mineral-rich substance traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine.

The capsule itself is made from hypromellose (a plant-based capsule material), brown rice flour, and magnesium silicate, which are inactive ingredients that help the capsule hold together and flow properly.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
General wellness

This Shilajit product is marketed for general wellness, not a specific health condition, so there's no single claim to grade — see Shilajit's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets general wellness (“general vitality and energy support”), not a specific health condition, so there is no single claim to grade against clinical-evidence data.

The evidence for shilajit isn't established yet in our data. We hold ratings for six potential uses—Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, athletic performance, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and osteopenia—but all are rated insufficient reliable evidence.

That means there haven't been enough high-quality studies to know whether it works for these conditions. If you're considering shilajit for a specific health goal, ask your pharmacist what the current research actually shows.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Shilajit is generally well tolerated, though a small number of rare reports exist. One person developed hives after a dose increase and later anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) requiring emergency treatment; another reported rare headache in clinical trials.

There's also one case report of high blood pressure linked to mineral imbalance in someone who took shilajit during pregnancy, though a direct cause wasn't confirmed. Importantly, unpurified shilajit products can contain heavy metals or contaminants, so use only tested brands you trust.

The safety data advises against shilajit during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so if you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Shilajit.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take antidiabetes drugs—including insulin, metformin, glibenclamide, or any other diabetes medication—check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before starting shilajit. There's a moderate risk of low blood sugar when the two are combined.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula marketed for general wellness rather than one specific gradeable purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Shilajit may be worth considering if you're interested in general wellness, but the evidence for specific health claims isn't solid yet. If you take diabetes medication, this product is a must-check before starting—the interaction with blood sugar is moderate and real.

Use only purified, tested brands, and skip it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Taking shilajit with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Most human and animal research shows that shilajit can decrease fasting plasma glucose levels. In an animal model, shilajit 100 mg per kg daily enhanced the glucose-lowering ability of both glibenclamide and metformin when given in combination over a 4 week period. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.

Shilajit Extract 100 mg Extra Strength by Swanson: Common Questions

Does Shilajit Extract 100 mg Extra Strength by Swanson interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Shilajit Extract 100 mg Extra Strength has a known interaction with 86 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Shilajit Extract 100 mg Extra Strength contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. The safety data advises against shilajit during pregnancy because there isn't enough safety information, and one case report linked it to serious mineral imbalance. Safety while breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best to avoid it then too. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
Does shilajit actually work for memory or sexual performance?
We don't have enough reliable evidence to say. The studies so far haven't been strong enough to confirm whether shilajit helps with Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, athletic performance, or the other conditions we have data on.
What's the difference between this brand and other shilajit products?
We only have data on this specific Swanson product. What matters most is that you use a purified, tested brand—unpurified shilajit can contain heavy metals or other contaminants. Check the label to confirm the product has been tested for purity.
Are there any side effects I should know about?
Most people tolerate it well. Rarely, headache has been reported. A small number of people may have an allergic reaction, and in one case someone developed a severe allergic reaction when the dose was increased; that person also had physical activity at the time. If you notice any unusual symptoms, stop taking it and talk to your pharmacist.
Does this product have fillers or other inactive ingredients?
Yes. Besides the active shilajit extract, the capsule contains brown rice flour, hypromellose (the capsule material itself), and magnesium silicate to help the powder flow and hold together.
