Sodium BHB Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Sodium BHB against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Sodium BHB is a straightforward product: one active ingredient, sodium. It's a mineral your body needs in small amounts for nerve and muscle function, but this supplement is a concentrated dose meant to deliver extra sodium to your system.
There are no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for sodium supplementation is mixed and depends on what you're using it for. It's likely effective for cystic fibrosis, and possibly effective for protecting the kidneys from damage caused by amphotericin B (a powerful antifungal drug).
For bipolar disorder and congestive heart failure, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it helps.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is well tolerated when you stay within normal dietary amounts — up to about 2,300 mg per day is considered safe for chronic disease risk reduction. The catch is that too much sodium is linked to high blood pressure, heart strain, and kidney disease.
Serious side effects are rare but can include worsened heart or kidney problems. The data also shows a potential link between high sodium intake and gastric cancer risk in population studies.
Pregnancy and lactation ratings are inconsistent in our data — one entry calls it likely safe and another possibly unsafe — so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before supplementing if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications before taking this product if you take blood pressure drugs (antihypertensives), lithium for mood disorders, corticosteroids (steroids), didanosine (an antiviral), tolvaptan, or any other sodium-containing medication — all have Moderate interactions with sodium supplements.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a sodium supplement, so it's not for most people — you get plenty of sodium from food. Consider it only if a doctor has specifically recommended it for a medical condition like cystic fibrosis, and only then if your other medications won't conflict with it.
Anyone on blood pressure drugs, lithium, steroids, or medications containing sodium should check with us or their pharmacist before starting.

Sodium BHB by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Sodium BHB by BulkSupplements.com is a single-ingredient supplement containing sodium, which interacts with a number of medications.
The most serious documented interactions involve blood pressure drugs (antihypertensives). High sodium intake can raise blood pressure and may reduce how well these medications work, sometimes requiring dose increases to keep blood pressure under control.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sodium also has Moderate interactions with mood-stabilizing drugs like lithium — extra sodium can lower lithium levels in your blood, while cutting back on sodium can raise them and risk lithium toxicity. It also affects corticosteroids (steroids), certain antivirals like didanosine, tolvaptan (a water-pill-like drug for low sodium), and sodium-containing medications themselves, all through the risk of high blood sodium (hypernatremia).
Although you're only getting one active ingredient here, these interactions span 203 individual medications. Before you start, use the search tool below to check your exact prescriptions — especially if you take blood pressure medication, lithium, steroids, or any other sodium-containing drug.

For each ingredient in Sodium BHB with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
