What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: sodium, a mineral your body needs to regulate fluid balance, nerve signals, and blood pressure. Sodium BHB Powder is a straightforward formulation — it's 10 grams of sodium per serving with no inactive fillers or other ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence we hold supports sodium for cystic fibrosis (likely effective) and suggests a possible benefit in limiting kidney damage from amphotericin B, a serious antifungal drug. For bipolar disorder and congestive heart failure, the evidence isn't strong enough for us to rate it.
Sodium is essential for your body to function, but taking it as a supplement for other uses should be discussed with your doctor — especially since excess sodium carries its own health risks.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is well tolerated in moderate amounts up to the recommended daily limit of 2.3 grams. However, the facts emphasize that too much sodium is linked to high blood pressure and strain on your heart.
Serious adverse effects are rare but include worsening high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease. Population studies have also found that high sodium intake is associated with increased gastric cancer risk.
During pregnancy and lactation, the safety data is mixed — rated both likely safe and possibly unsafe — so you'll want to talk with your doctor or midwife before supplementing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Talk to your pharmacist before using this product if you take lithium, blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), corticosteroids, didanosine, sodium phosphate products, tolvaptan, or any other sodium-containing drugs. High sodium intake can lower lithium levels and reduce blood pressure control, and combining sodium supplements with several of these raises the risk of dangerously high blood sodium.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Sodium supplements are meant for specific medical conditions like cystic fibrosis, not general use. Most people get plenty of sodium from food.
If you take blood pressure medication, lithium, corticosteroids, or any kidney or heart medication, you need to check with your pharmacist before taking this — the interactions are real and can affect how your drugs work.

Sodium monograph & interactionsSodium BHB Powder 10 g by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Sodium BHB Powder by BulkSupplements.com is a single-ingredient product — sodium — that does interact with a number of medications.
The most serious documented interaction is with lithium (used for bipolar disorder). High sodium intake can lower lithium levels in your blood by increasing how your kidneys clear it, which means the medication may not work as well.
On the flip side, if you cut sodium while on lithium, levels can spike and cause lithium toxicity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sodium also interacts with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), corticosteroids, didanosine (an HIV drug), sodium phosphate (bowel prep), tolvaptan (a water-balance drug), and other sodium-containing medications — all rated Moderate severity. High sodium intake can blunt blood pressure control, and combining sodium supplements with these drugs raises the risk of high blood sodium levels (hypernatremia) and related complications.
Our data checked sodium for interactions; no other active ingredients are in this product. Altogether, these interactions span 203 individual medications.
If you take any prescription medication — especially for blood pressure, mood, or kidney function — run it through the checker below before adding a sodium supplement.

For each ingredient in Sodium BHB Powder 10 g with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
