Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: sodium. Sodium is an electrolyte your body needs for nerve and muscle function, fluid balance, and blood pressure regulation.
The supplement comes as a powder with no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence we hold shows sodium is likely effective for cystic fibrosis and possibly effective for protecting the kidneys from damage caused by the antibiotic amphotericin B. For bipolar disorder and congestive heart failure, the evidence isn't established in our data.
Most people meet their sodium needs through regular diet — a supplement is usually unnecessary and can be risky if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney problems.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is well tolerated at normal dietary levels — the Chronic Disease Risk Reduction standard is 2.3 grams daily. Beyond that, excess sodium is linked to high blood pressure, heart strain, and kidney disease.
Serious side effects are rare but include worsening heart and kidney disease. Some observational studies suggest very high sodium intake is tied to a higher risk of gastric cancer and bone loss; very low sodium levels can also increase fracture risk.
The safety data on sodium in pregnancy and lactation shows it is likely safe, but one entry rates it possibly unsafe — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether a sodium supplement makes sense for you during pregnancy or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist if you take lithium (risk of toxicity or reduced effect from sodium changes), blood pressure medications (sodium may reduce their effectiveness), corticosteroids, didanosine, sodium phosphate laxatives, tolvaptan, or any other sodium-containing drugs. Extra sodium with these medications increases the risk of dangerously high sodium levels in your blood.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Sodium supplements are rarely needed; most people get plenty from food. This product is worth considering only if your doctor specifically recommends sodium supplementation — for instance, in cystic fibrosis or to protect kidneys during certain antibiotic treatment.
If you take blood pressure medication, lithium, steroids, or any other prescription, check with your pharmacist before starting. Avoid this supplement if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney problems without medical guidance.

Sodium D-Aspartate by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Sodium D-Aspartate by BulkSupplements.com is a single-ingredient powder containing sodium, which interacts with a number of medications.
The most serious concern is with lithium (used for bipolar disorder): changes in your sodium intake — especially a sudden increase from a supplement — can shift how much lithium stays in your bloodstream, raising the risk of toxicity or reducing its effect.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Moderate interactions also affect blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), since extra sodium can work against them and raise your blood pressure. Corticosteroids (steroids like prednisone), didanosine (an HIV medication), sodium phosphate laxatives, and tolvaptan (Samsca) all carry a moderate risk of high sodium levels in your blood (hypernatremia) if combined with this supplement.
Any other sodium-containing drugs pose the same concern.
Altogether, these interactions span 203 individual medications. Before you start this product, use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions — especially if you take lithium, blood pressure drugs, steroids, or HIV medications.

For each ingredient in Sodium D-Aspartate with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
