Strontium Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Strontium against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Strontium by Bio-Tech Pharmacal is a single-ingredient supplement containing strontium in a gelatin capsule. Strontium is a mineral that your body can incorporate into bone, and it's been studied for bone strength and related conditions.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence supports strontium for dental sensitivity (tooth pain triggered by hot, cold, or touch) and pain from bone tumors — both are rated effective. For osteoporosis (brittle bones), strontium is likely effective based on the research we hold.
It's possibly effective for osteoarthritis (joint wear) and prostate cancer, but the evidence for those uses is less robust. The strength of the evidence varies by condition, so talk with your doctor about whether strontium fits your specific situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Strontium ranelate — the form studied most — is generally well tolerated at doses up to 2 grams daily. The most common side effects are skin inflammation (dermatitis, eczema), diarrhea, headache, and nausea.
However, strontium carries serious cardiovascular risks: research shows it may increase the risk of blood clots (venous thromboembolism) by about 50% and heart attack by about 1.6-fold in people with osteoporosis, though these events are rare. For pregnancy, the safety data advises against strontium use.
For breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so you should avoid it while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking strontium, check with your pharmacist if you use estrogens (including hormonal birth control), androgens (testosterone or similar), antacids, quinolone antibiotics (like ciprofloxacin), or tetracycline antibiotics (like doxycycline). All are rated Moderate interactions and may need timing adjustments or closer monitoring.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Strontium may help with bone health, dental sensitivity, or bone pain from cancer, but it carries real cardiovascular risks you need to weigh with your doctor. If you take estrogens, androgens, antacids, or antibiotics, check your specific medications before starting.
Talk with your pharmacist to see if the benefits make sense for you.

Strontium by Bio-Tech Pharmacal Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Strontium by Bio-Tech Pharmacal interacts with several medication types, and the most serious concern involves estrogens and androgens (male hormones).
Both may reduce how your body clears strontium, potentially building it up to higher levels and increasing the risk of side effects.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Antacids are a moderate concern — aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and especially calcium can cut strontium absorption by 20% to 70%, which weakens its effectiveness. Space them at least 2 hours apart.
Quinolone antibiotics (like ciprofloxacin) and tetracycline antibiotics (like doxycycline) also interact moderately: strontium can bind to these drugs in your stomach and prevent your body from absorbing them properly. Again, separate doses by at least 2 hours.
Altogether, these interactions span 101 individual medications. If you take any estrogen, androgen, antacid, or antibiotic, run the specific medication through the interaction checker below before you start this supplement.

For each ingredient in Strontium with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Strontium
Androgens
Theoretically, androgens might reduce the excretion of strontium, potentially increasing its effects and adverse effects.
A small clinical study suggests that treatment with androgens such as testosterone, nandrolone, oxandrolone, and oxymetholone for 5-6 weeks might decrease urinary strontium excretion. The clinical significance of this interaction is unknown.
Antacids
Antacids can reduce the absorption of strontium, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide can reduce absorption of strontium ranelate by 20% to 25%. Calcium can reduce its absorption to 60% to 70%. Avoid taking antacids within 2 hours of a dose of strontium ranelate. This interaction has also been reported with orally-administered radioactive strontium-85. It will likely also occur with other forms of strontium.
Estrogens
Theoretically, estrogens might reduce the excretion of strontium, potentially increasing its effects and adverse effects.
A small clinical study suggests that treatment with estrogens for 5-6 weeks might decrease urinary strontium excretion. The clinical significance of this interaction is unknown.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Theoretically, strontium might decrease the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.
Strontium is a divalent cation with similar properties to calcium. It is likely to form complexes with quinolones in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, preventing absorption of the antibiotic. Recommend taking strontium supplements at least 2 hours before or after quinolones to avoid an interaction.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, strontium might decrease the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics.
Strontium is a divalent cation with similar properties to calcium. It is likely to form complexes with tetracyclines in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, preventing absorption of the antibiotic. Recommend taking strontium supplements at least 2 hours before or after tetracyclines to avoid an interaction.
