Strontium and Prasterone (prescription drug)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ESTROGENS

Why this applies to Prasterone (prescription drug)

Prasterone (prescription drug) falls under ESTROGENS — the group Strontium interacts with.

Theoretically, estrogens might reduce the excretion of strontium, potentially increasing its effects and adverse effects.
A small clinical study suggests that treatment with estrogens for 5-6 weeks might decrease urinary strontium excretion. The clinical significance of this interaction is unknown.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Intrarosa (prasterone). This is a vaginal insert that your body converts into estrogen and testosterone right in the tissue, so it acts a bit like an estrogen locally. The concern on file is that estrogens may slow how much strontium your kidneys flush out in your urine. If less strontium leaves your body, more can build up, which could nudge up both its effects and its side effects.

Honestly, this is a weak, mostly theoretical concern. It comes from lab work and one small study, and prasterone is delivered vaginally with limited spillover into the bloodstream, so its estrogen effect on strontium handling is likely small. Still, since strontium itself carries heart-related cautions, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

This page covers Strontium only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Prasterone (prescription drug) page lists 63 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Grapefruit (major), Aletris (moderate), Alfalfa (moderate), Androstenediol (moderate) and Androstenedione (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 56 moderate · 6 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Prasterone (prescription drug) page

“Grapefruit is the single major-rated interaction on prasterone's (Intrarosa) list, and it earns that spot. It blocks the enzyme that clears estrogens, so estrogen levels can climb, and side effects with them.”

About Strontium

What is Strontium?

  • Bone health and osteoporosis
  • Reducing fracture risk
  • Tooth sensitivity (in some toothpastes)
  • Supporting bone density

Strontium is a mineral that has been studied mainly for bone health and osteoporosis. The prescription form (strontium ranelate) showed benefit for fracture risk but carries serious heart-related safety concerns, while the over-the-counter supplement form (strontium citrate) has much less evidence. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using it, especially if you have heart disease or are at risk for blood clots.
