Sodium Bicarbonate (OTC Drug) falls under ANTACIDS — the group Strontium interacts with.

Antacids can reduce the absorption of strontium, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide can reduce absorption of strontium ranelate by 20% to 25%. Calcium can reduce its absorption to 60% to 70%. Avoid taking antacids within 2 hours of a dose of strontium ranelate. This interaction has also been reported with orally-administered radioactive strontium-85. It will likely also occur with other forms of strontium.

Here's the simple version: when you take a strontium supplement to support your bones, an antacid like sodium bicarbonate sitting in your stomach at the same time can get in the way of how much strontium your body actually soaks up. Less strontium absorbed means you may not get the bone benefit you were hoping for. This isn't a dangerous reaction, it's more of a 'they don't mix well at the same moment' situation.

The easy fix is timing. Try to keep your strontium dose and your sodium bicarbonate several hours apart (about 2 hours is the usual advice). That way your antacid still calms your heartburn or indigestion, and your strontium has a fair chance to absorb. Run your schedule by your pharmacist to fit it around your other meds.

Sodium bicarbonate treats several different types of discomfort depending on the product and how it is used. Taken by mouth, it relieves heartburn, sour stomach, acid indigestion, and upset stomach. EcoDent Ultimate Essential Mouthcare oral solution is used to temporarily clean minor mouth wounds and soothe minor gum inflammation from dental procedures, dentures, orthodontic appliances, or accidental injury.

Used on the skin, sodium bicarbonate products — including After Bite Kids cream, After Bite Advanced and After Bite X Tech liquids, Itch Eraser Sensitive cream, AHHH Bite Relief gel, Insect sting relief latex lotion, Insect sting relief pad, and Dermfree Insect Bite Relief liquid — temporarily relieve minor skin irritation and itching from insect bites, stings, and contact with poison ivy, oak, or sumac. AHHH Bite Relief also provides rapid relief from specific biting insects including deer flies, horse flies, black flies, mosquitoes, bees, wasps, and chiggers, and from rashes and eczema.
