Strontium + Doripenem
Doripenem brand name: Doribax.
Doripenem falls into 2 drug categories that Strontium can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, strontium might decrease the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Strontium interacts with whole categories of medication. Doripenem falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Strontium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
1 of 2Why this applies to Doripenem
Doripenem falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Strontium interacts with.
Strontium is a divalent cation with similar properties to calcium. It is likely to form complexes with quinolones in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, preventing absorption of the antibiotic. Recommend taking strontium supplements at least 2 hours before or after quinolones to avoid an interaction.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to know first: this interaction was written for quinolone antibiotics (like ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin), and doripenem isn't a quinolone. It's a carbapenem, and it's given as an injection into a vein, not as a pill you swallow. The whole concern with strontium is that it binds up oral antibiotics in your stomach so they don't absorb well. Since doripenem goes straight into your bloodstream, that gut-binding problem really doesn't apply here.
So I wouldn't expect strontium to weaken your doripenem or change how it fights your infection. This is theoretical anyway, based on pharmacology rather than real cases. Still, strontium has its own heart-related cautions, so it's always worth a quick check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything.

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS
2 of 2Doripenem also falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS.
Strontium is a divalent cation with similar properties to calcium. It is likely to form complexes with tetracyclines in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, preventing absorption of the antibiotic. Recommend taking strontium supplements at least 2 hours before or after tetracyclines to avoid an interaction.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the honest picture: the interaction we have on file was written for oral tetracycline antibiotics, where strontium (a calcium-like mineral) can bind to the drug in your gut and block it from being absorbed. The worry there is a weaker antibiotic and a poorly treated infection.
Doripenem (Doribax) is different in one big way. It's given as an injection into a vein, not swallowed as a pill. Since it never travels through your stomach with the strontium, that gut-binding problem really doesn't apply here. So this particular concern is largely theoretical and, in practice, unlikely to matter for an IV antibiotic like doripenem. Still, if you're sick enough to need this medication, let your hospital team and pharmacist know about every supplement you take so they can keep an eye on things.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Doripenem page
“Two entries here matter more than all the others, and I would read them first. Doripenem (Doribax) is an intravenous antibiotic reserved for serious bacterial infections, which means anything that weakens treatment or piles on risk deserves genuine caution.”

About Strontium
What is Strontium?
- Bone health and osteoporosis
- Reducing fracture risk
- Tooth sensitivity (in some toothpastes)
- Supporting bone density
Strontium is a mineral that has been studied mainly for bone health and osteoporosis. The prescription form (strontium ranelate) showed benefit for fracture risk but carries serious heart-related safety concerns, while the over-the-counter supplement form (strontium citrate) has much less evidence. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using it, especially if you have heart disease or are at risk for blood clots.
About Doripenem Injection
What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?
Brand name: Doribax
-
Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.
-
Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
