Strontium + Clinafloxacin
Clinafloxacin brand name: Clinafloxacin.
Strontium has a moderate interaction with Clinafloxacin. Theoretically, strontium might decrease the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
Why this applies to Clinafloxacin
Clinafloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Strontium interacts with.
Strontium is a divalent cation with similar properties to calcium. It is likely to form complexes with quinolones in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, preventing absorption of the antibiotic. Recommend taking strontium supplements at least 2 hours before or after quinolones to avoid an interaction.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist with these two. Strontium acts a lot like calcium in your gut, and minerals like that can grab onto a quinolone antibiotic such as clinafloxacin and clump together. When that happens, less of the antibiotic gets absorbed into your bloodstream, so it may not fight the infection as well. In short, strontium could weaken your antibiotic, not make it stronger.
The good news is this is fairly easy to manage. Spacing them out, usually taking your strontium at least 2 hours before or after the clinafloxacin, helps keep them from binding. This concern is based on how these minerals behave rather than firm human studies, so don't panic. Just run your timing plan by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

This page covers Strontium only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Clinafloxacin page lists 87 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Apple (major), Grapefruit (major), Sweet Orange (major) and Bacillus Coagulans (moderate).
By severity: 4 major · 62 moderate · 21 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clinafloxacin page
“If you have been prescribed clinafloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic, start with the four interactions rated major, because they all do the same thing: apple, grapefruit, and orange juice, along with activated charcoal, can sharply cut how much of the drug you absorb, and an antibiotic that never reaches your bloodstream cannot clear the…”

About Strontium
What is Strontium?
- Bone health and osteoporosis
- Reducing fracture risk
- Tooth sensitivity (in some toothpastes)
- Supporting bone density
Strontium is a mineral that has been studied mainly for bone health and osteoporosis. The prescription form (strontium ranelate) showed benefit for fracture risk but carries serious heart-related safety concerns, while the over-the-counter supplement form (strontium citrate) has much less evidence. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using it, especially if you have heart disease or are at risk for blood clots.
