Strontium and Tigecycline

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Strontium interacts with whole categories of medication. Tigecycline falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Strontium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Tigecycline

Tigecycline falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Strontium interacts with.

Theoretically, strontium might decrease the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.
Strontium is a divalent cation with similar properties to calcium. It is likely to form complexes with quinolones in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, preventing absorption of the antibiotic. Recommend taking strontium supplements at least 2 hours before or after quinolones to avoid an interaction.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Here's the practical picture with tigecycline (Tygacil). Strontium acts a lot like calcium in your body, and minerals like these can grab onto certain antibiotics in the gut and form clumps the body can't absorb. The worry on file is that this binding could lower how much antibiotic gets in, which would mean a weaker punch against your infection.

One big thing eases this concern: tigecycline isn't a pill. It's given as an injection straight into a vein, so it skips the gut entirely. That means strontium taken by mouth shouldn't tie it up the way it could with a swallowed antibiotic. This caution is theoretical and really aimed at oral drugs. Still, when you're being treated for a serious infection, it's worth a quick word with your doctor or pharmacist about any supplements you take.

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS

2 of 2

Tigecycline also falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS.

Theoretically, strontium might decrease the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics.
Strontium is a divalent cation with similar properties to calcium. It is likely to form complexes with tetracyclines in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, preventing absorption of the antibiotic. Recommend taking strontium supplements at least 2 hours before or after tetracyclines to avoid an interaction.

Here's a bit of good news for this particular pairing. The concern with strontium and tetracycline-type antibiotics is that strontium, like calcium, can grab onto the antibiotic in your gut and form a clump your body can't absorb, leaving you with less drug to fight the infection. But tigecycline (Tygacil) is given as an IV infusion, not as a pill you swallow. Because it goes straight into your bloodstream, it never mixes with strontium in your stomach, so this absorption problem really doesn't apply here.

Keep in mind this whole interaction is theoretical to begin with and matters most for oral tetracyclines. Since tigecycline is hospital-administered, your care team is already managing your medications, but it never hurts to mention any supplements you take.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

“Tigecycline (Tygacil) is an intravenous antibiotic usually reserved for serious or resistant infections, and its supplement list deserves real attention. The two major-rated entries come first: oleander, a heart-toxic plant whose compounds may build to dangerous levels with certain antibiotics on board, and PABA, which can blunt the an…”

About Strontium

What is Strontium?

  • Bone health and osteoporosis
  • Reducing fracture risk
  • Tooth sensitivity (in some toothpastes)
  • Supporting bone density

Strontium is a mineral that has been studied mainly for bone health and osteoporosis. The prescription form (strontium ranelate) showed benefit for fracture risk but carries serious heart-related safety concerns, while the over-the-counter supplement form (strontium citrate) has much less evidence. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using it, especially if you have heart disease or are at risk for blood clots.
