Superior Joint Care Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Superior Joint Care against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains three active ingredients. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your joints and skin that may help with moisture retention.
Astaxanthin is a red pigment from algae with antioxidant properties. Krill oil comes from Antarctic shrimp-like creatures and supplies omega-3 fatty acids.
The remaining ingredients are inactive — gelatin capsule, oils, and colorants to deliver these actives.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed. Hyaluronic acid is possibly effective for dry eye and venous leg ulcers (slow-healing sores on the legs from poor blood flow), but we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate it for aging skin or other conditions.
Krill oil is possibly effective for dry eye, but evidence is insufficient to rate it for aging skin, brain health, or other uses. Astaxanthin's effectiveness for the conditions listed — from cognitive decline to athletic performance — has insufficient reliable evidence in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, hyaluronic acid and krill oil appear to be well tolerated in most adults, though long-term safety for supplements isn't fully studied. Astaxanthin also seems well tolerated, but long-term data are limited.
Common side effects from krill oil include bloating, diarrhea, nausea, fishy burps, and heartburn — usually mild and less severe than from fish oil. Astaxanthin may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, or red-colored stools.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the safety data for astaxanthin advises against use. Krill oil has insufficient data; talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using during pregnancy or while nursing.
No pregnancy or breastfeeding data are on file for hyaluronic acid — discuss with your healthcare provider if you're considering this supplement in those periods.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your blood thinners (like warfarin) and antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin or clopidogrel) before taking this — krill oil may increase bleeding risk. Also flag any antidiabetes medications, since krill oil might lower blood sugar further.
If you take drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes — a broad group including certain statins, some cancer drugs, and certain antihistamines — run them through the checker; astaxanthin may theoretically reduce their levels, though this hasn't been proven in humans.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is possibly effective for dry eye, but evidence is lacking for most other uses. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or drugs broken down by your liver, check your exact medications with the tool on this page before starting — the interactions are theoretical but worth confirming.
If you have a shellfish allergy, skip krill oil products. A quick conversation with your pharmacist about your specific drugs is a smart move.

Superior Joint Care by Schiff MegaRed Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Schiff MegaRed Superior Joint Care contains three active ingredients, two of which have documented interactions with medications.
Krill oil carries the most serious concern: it may increase bleeding risk if you're taking anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antiplatelets (drugs that prevent blood clots), a Moderate severity interaction. The mechanism isn't fully proven in humans, but krill oil's omega-3 fatty acids can reduce how easily blood cells stick together.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Krill oil also has a Moderate interaction with antidiabetes drugs (medications that lower blood sugar). In theory, combining them might lower your glucose too much, though human evidence is mixed — one small study found krill oil didn't reduce blood sugar in type 2 diabetes patients already on medication.
Astaxanthin, another ingredient, may theoretically decrease levels of drugs broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzymes (Moderate for both). This effect hasn't been reported in humans — it's based on lab research — but common drugs affected include certain statins, some cancer medications, and some antihistamines.
Hyaluronic acid has no interactions documented in our data.
Altogether, these interactions span 827 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page with your exact drugs before starting.

For each ingredient in Superior Joint Care with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Krill Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, krill oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Taking high doses of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can modestly decrease platelet aggregation. Since krill oil also contains these fatty acids, taking high doses of krill oil might also inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, taking high doses of krill oil with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. However, the omega-3 content of krill oil is much lower than that of fish oil.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking krill oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research in animals and humans shows that krill oil might lower blood glucose levels. However, a small study shows that taking krill oil does not reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, most of whom were taking antidiabetes drugs.
