What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: L-theanine, an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. At 200 mg per capsule, it's the only ingredient doing the work here.
The capsule itself is made from plant cellulose.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-theanine is possibly effective for supporting cognitive function according to the evidence we hold. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and cancer, the evidence is too limited to make a reliable rating.
If any of those latter uses interest you, we simply don't have enough data yet to say whether it'll help.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults when used short-term, but we don't have good long-term safety data, so it's not something to take indefinitely without talking to your pharmacist. Some people report headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep, or more vivid dreams.
One pediatric case of facial tics was reported after starting the supplement, but the child had a history of tics, so the link wasn't clear. There isn't enough safety data on theanine in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it during those times and talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your blood pressure medications first—theanine can lower pressure and might make them work too well. You should also review any CNS depressants (sleep aids, anxiety meds, pain relievers) and serotonergic drugs (certain antidepressants, migraine medications) before starting.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Theanine might be worth considering if you're looking to support your thinking and focus, but it's not a proven fix for memory loss or anxiety disorders. If you take any blood pressure medication, this one needs a careful check—same goes for sleep aids or antidepressants.

Formula
200 mg of Soothing Theanine
Theanine provides 200 mg of pure theanine – one of the most uniquely beneficial and unusual of amino acids. First of all, unlike other amino acids, theanine is not a building block of protein, but is almost exclusively found in the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) where it accounts for both its distinctive flavor, as well as its unique calming properties. Plus, because theanine can cross the blood brain barrier, it can deliver its beneficial properties directly to the brain and nervous system. Theanine has been shown to enhance alpha brain-wave activity, which is associated with a relaxed, but still focused and alert state. Theanine promotes the production of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, which support relaxation and calm. The observation that the caffeine in green tea is less intense than that of coffee results from green tea’s abundance of theanine. In fact, theanine is often used to reduce the uncomfortable effects of caffeine and to support a relaxed state. Theanine can also help to diminish perceived stress and tension while promoting calm attention and focus. In short, Theanine naturally supports the brain and its neurotransmitters promoting calm, relaxed focus without drowsiness.

Theanine 200 mg by ProCaps Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Theanine 200 mg by ProCaps does interact with certain medications, so you'll want to check your list before starting.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious concern is with blood pressure drugs (antihypertensives). Theanine can lower blood pressure on its own, and when you combine it with a medication that does the same thing, the drop in your blood pressure could be more pronounced than intended.
Animal studies support this risk, so if you take any blood pressure medication, this is the one to flag.
You should also be aware of two other, less serious interactions. First, theanine might add to the sedating effects of drugs that depress your central nervous system (CNS depressants)—things like sleep aids, anxiety medications, or opioids—though the clinical significance isn't completely clear.
Second, theanine's effect on serotonin levels is mixed in the research, and while no serotonin syndrome cases have been reported with it, serotonergic drugs (certain antidepressants and migraine medications) are still worth reviewing.
Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications. Use the medication checker below to look up your exact drugs before you begin.

For each ingredient in Theanine 200 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
