Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-Theanine, an amino acid sourced from tea leaves that works on brain chemistry. The capsule itself is made from vegetable material — there are no fillers or extra additives.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence here is mixed. L-Theanine is possibly effective for supporting cognitive function, so if you're looking for a mental-clarity edge, there's some backing for that.
For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and cancer, the evidence we hold isn't reliable enough to say whether it works. If those are your concerns, you'll want to talk with your doctor about what the current research really shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, but we don't have good long-term safety data, so taking it for months or years is less clear. The most common side effect is headache; some people also report drowsiness, longer sleep, and more vivid dreams.
One child on a much higher dose (400 mg daily) developed facial tics within four days, though they stopped when she quit — but she'd had tics before, so the link wasn't certain. There isn't enough safety data to know whether L-Theanine is safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so the guidance is to avoid it during those times.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your blood pressure medications first — L-Theanine can strengthen their effect. Also run any sedating drugs (sleep aids, some anxiety or pain meds) and serotonergic antidepressants or migraine drugs through the checker to be safe, though the latter two carry Minor risk and no real-world cases of harm.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Theanine is a single, straightforward supplement possibly useful for cognitive sharpness in healthy adults. If you take blood pressure medication, sleep aids, or antidepressants, check with us first — this ingredient can potentiate some of them.
Long-term safety isn't well established, so it's mainly a short-term tool. Ask your pharmacist whether it fits your situation.

100% Pure L-Theanine 200 Milligrams by NutraBio Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
NutraBio's L-Theanine can interact with a few medication types, most notably blood pressure drugs.
L-Theanine may lower your blood pressure on its own, so if you're already on an antihypertensive medication, taking them together could push your pressure down more than intended — that's a Moderate concern.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
There's also a Minor theoretical risk with sedating medications (sleep aids, certain anxiety drugs, some pain relievers). L-Theanine might add to their drowsy effect, though we're not certain this matters in real life.
It may also interact with serotonergic drugs (some antidepressants and migraine medications) — but here's the thing: studies conflict on whether L-Theanine even changes serotonin, and no one's actually reported serotonin syndrome from it, so this remains a Minor concern on paper.
Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications. Before you start, run your blood pressure meds, sleep aids, and any antidepressants through our interaction checker below — that's the safest move.

For each ingredient in 100% Pure L-Theanine 200 Milligrams with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
