Thyroid Care has four active ingredients. L-tyrosine is an amino acid that your body uses to make thyroid hormone and other important signaling compounds.
The product also contains three forms of iodine — potassium iodide, sodium iodide, and molecular iodine — all of which supply iodine, a mineral your thyroid needs to function. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients (microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and silica) that serve as fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-tyrosine is effective for phenylketonuria (PKU) and possibly effective for cognitive function and memory. The data we hold shows insufficient evidence to rate it for alcohol use disorder and dementia.
Molecular iodine is likely effective for radiation exposure and iodine deficiency, and possibly effective for oral mucositis and periodontitis. We don't have effectiveness ratings on file for potassium iodide or sodium iodide for any condition.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tyrosine is generally well tolerated but lacks thorough safety evaluation; talk to your healthcare provider before regular use. The most common side effects are fatigue, headache, heartburn, and nausea.
Potassium iodide is generally safe from food, but supplements can cause dangerously high blood levels, especially in people with kidney disease — use only under medical guidance. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Sodium iodide is well tolerated at normal dietary amounts but too much is linked to high blood pressure and heart strain; check with your doctor before supplementing. Molecular iodine is safe in normal dietary amounts, but high doses can cause thyroid problems, goiter, nausea, and a metallic taste.
Rare serious effects include hypersensitivity reactions. For pregnancy and breastfeeding: L-tyrosine has insufficient data — talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
Potassium iodide is likely safe in pregnancy but only under medical guidance. Sodium iodide is likely safe in pregnancy but possibly unsafe while breastfeeding.

L-tyrosine may decrease how well levodopa (used for Parkinson's disease) works by competing for absorption — separate doses by at least 2 hours if you take both. It may also have additive effects with thyroid hormone medications, potentially raising thyroid hormone levels further.
Potassium iodide can dangerously raise blood potassium levels if you're on potassium-sparing water pills, ACE inhibitors (for high blood pressure), or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Sodium iodide carries moderate-severity interactions with blood pressure medications, corticosteroids, lithium, and several others — high sodium can interfere with blood pressure control and alter lithium levels.
Molecular iodine may worsen thyroid suppression if you're on lithium, may interfere with antithyroid drugs, and can cause excessive iodine buildup if you're on amiodarone (a heart rhythm medication that's already high in iodine). Altogether, these interactions span 245 individual medications.

L-Tyrosine
Levodopa
Theoretically, tyrosine might decrease the effectiveness of levodopa.
Tyrosine and levodopa compete for absorption in the proximal duodenum by the large neutral amino acid (LNAA) transport system. Advise patients to separate doses of tyrosine and levodopa by at least 2 hours.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, tyrosine might have additive effects with thyroid hormone medications.
Tyrosine is a precursor to thyroxine and might increase levels of thyroid hormones.
Iodine
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Combining iodine with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Iodine might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Lithium
Combining iodine with lithium might have additive hypothyroid effects.
Lithium can inhibit thyroid function. Several case reports suggest that concomitant use of lithium and potassium iodide can reduce thyroid function in otherwise healthy adults. Monitor thyroid function.
