What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 2 active ingredients.
  • “A 50:50 Blend” is a proprietary blend — the label gives one combined amount (60,000,000,000 Live Organism(s)) without saying how much of each component you get.

Ultra Flora IB contains two active probiotic strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM and Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07. These are live microorganisms intended to support your gut flora.

The capsule also contains inactive ingredients including microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silica.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: relieve bowel irritation and abdominal discomfort.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Clostridioides difficile infection, Colic, Constipation, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Constipation, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Radiation-induced diarrhea, Lactose intolerance, and more.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. It's rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease, and the evidence is insufficient to rate it for acute respiratory distress syndrome.

We have no effectiveness data on file for Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects like mild bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea can occur when taking it with other probiotics, though these are uncommon.

Because it contains live organisms, there's a theoretical concern about infection in people with severely weakened immune systems — check with your doctor before use. We hold no pregnancy or breastfeeding safety data for either ingredient in this product.

Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Ultra Flora IB may be worth considering if you have IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or certain gut infections — the evidence supports those uses. Don't take it at the same time as antibiotics; separate them by a few hours.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Ultra Flora IB by Metagenics: Common Questions

Does Ultra Flora IB by Metagenics interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Ultra Flora IB has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Ultra Flora IB contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take Ultra Flora IB with my antibiotic?
Not at the same time. Antibiotics kill the live organisms in this probiotic, so it won't work as intended. Ask your pharmacist how far apart to space them — usually a few hours is enough.
What's the difference between these two probiotic strains?
Both are beneficial bacteria that live in your gut. Lactobacillus acidophilus has research supporting it for IBS and antibiotic-related diarrhea. We don't have effectiveness data on file for Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07.
Will this cause side effects?
Most people tolerate it well. A small number of people experience mild gas, bloating, or belly discomfort, especially when combining probiotics. Serious infections are very rare and mainly a concern if your immune system is severely weakened.
Is it safe to take during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
We don't have safety data on file for either ingredient during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist — they can give you personalized advice based on your situation.
How does this help with IBS?
Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, meaning the research shows promise but isn't definitive yet. It works by supporting your natural gut bacteria balance.
