Ultra Probiotics contains 13 active ingredients: a blend of beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. lactis, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus, L. casei, B. bifidum, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, L. bulgaricus, L. brevis, and L. sporogenes), fructooligosaccharides (a prebiotic fiber that feeds good bacteria), and acai whole fruit concentrate. The remaining ingredients are inactive fillers and binders like microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate that help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?

For the probiotic strains we have data on: Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections.
L. sporogenes (Bacillus coagulans) is possibly effective for constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Streptococcus thermophilus and the other Lactobacillus species in the blend don't have established effectiveness for the conditions we checked — the evidence isn't there yet.
Fructooligosaccharides and acai both lack reliable evidence for their listed uses. The other probiotic strains have no effectiveness data on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and most of the other live probiotic bacteria in this product are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, there is a theoretical concern that any live probiotic organism could cause infection in patients with severely weakened immune systems, those on indwelling catheters, or those who are critically ill — in rare cases, some probiotics have been associated with serious infections like sepsis or endocarditis in these populations.
Fructooligosaccharides commonly cause gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort, especially at higher doses; most people who experience these side effects find them mild. Some people taking probiotics have reported mild gastrointestinal upset including flatulence, bloating, and abdominal pain, though these events are uncommon.
Data on acai supplement safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited, so caution is advised if you're pregnant or nursing.

The most serious interaction we've documented is with antibiotic drugs — four of the active probiotic ingredients (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, L. bulgaricus, and L. sporogenes) may have reduced effectiveness when taken at the same time as antibiotics, because the antibiotics can kill off the live organisms in the supplement. Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
B. bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
L. bulgaricus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus delbrueckii with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. delbrueckii.
Lactobacillus delbrueckii preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. delbrueckii preparations by at least two hours.
L. sporogenes

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking acai with antidiabetes drugs might interfere with glycemic control.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy adults has shown that taking acai may increase or decrease levels of fasting blood glucose.
