HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Vana Holy Basil by Herbal Terra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: Vana Holy Basil Leaf Extract (in dry form). The other ingredients — alcohol, water, and glycerin — are inactive components that help deliver and preserve the extract in liquid form.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence for holy basil in our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate its use for generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, headache, respiratory tract infections, dental plaque, or diabetes. That means the studies we have don't yet support or rule out benefit for these conditions.
If you're looking for a particular effect, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what's been shown to help.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil extract is generally well tolerated in the short term, though long-term safety data in humans are limited. The most common side effects from oral use are loose stools and nausea — a small number of trial participants reported these.
If used topically (like as a mouthwash), it may leave a bitter taste. Because animal safety data raise concerns and human safety in pregnancy isn't established, avoid this product if you're pregnant.
Similarly, there isn't enough reliable safety information for breastfeeding, so don't use it while nursing — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what's safe for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting Vana Holy Basil, check whether you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (Moderate risk), diabetes medications (Moderate risk), or pentobarbital or other sedatives (Moderate risk). Even though human data are limited, animal research shows real potential for interactions in these categories.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Holy basil may be worth considering if you're exploring herbal options for anxiety or other uses, but the evidence in our data doesn't yet support effectiveness for any condition. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or sedatives, you need to check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
Pregnant or breastfeeding — skip it and ask your healthcare provider what's safe.

Vana Holy Basil by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Vana Holy Basil by Herbal Terra contains one active ingredient — holy basil leaf extract — which interacts with medications in three main categories.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel). Animal research shows holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, though we don't yet know if this happens in people — but the risk is real enough that you'll want to check before combining them.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Second, holy basil may increase the effect of diabetes medications. Small clinical studies show it can lower blood sugar, so if you're on drugs to manage diabetes, taking this could theoretically push your glucose too low.
Third, there's a theoretical concern with pentobarbital (Nembutal), a barbiturate sedative — animal data suggest holy basil might boost its sedative effects, though again, human data are limited.
Altogether, these interactions span 211 individual medications. Check your exact prescriptions with the tool on this page before you start.
