Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: vanadium, supplied as vanadyl sulfate at a 2 mg dose per tablet. Vanadium is a trace mineral that your body uses in very small amounts.

The remaining ingredients—dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium, purified water, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and polyethylene glycol—are inactive ingredients that help form and stabilize the tablet.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Vanadium's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: glucose metabolism.
  • We looked for evidence on: Diabetes, Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes), blood sugar control, insulin sensitivity.
  • The closest evidence on file: Vanadium is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Diabetes (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Vanadium is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes).

The evidence for vanadium is mixed. It's rated likely effective for vanadium deficiency, which is rare in people eating a typical diet.

For athletic performance, diabetes, and high cholesterol, the evidence is insufficient to rate its usefulness reliably. While a few small studies in type 2 diabetes patients suggested vanadium might improve insulin sensitivity, the data aren't strong enough yet to call it proven.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Vanadium is generally well tolerated at amounts below 1.8 mg daily. At higher doses, the most common side effects are gastrointestinal: abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, gas, and nausea.

Rarely, long-term high-dose use has been linked to kidney damage. Allergic reactions to vanadium are uncommon but have been reported, ranging from itchy rashes and eye irritation to contact dermatitis in people who handle vanadium-containing materials.

Because there isn't enough safety information in pregnancy and breastfeeding, the data advises against supplement doses during these times—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Vanadium.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 208 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take Vanadyl Sulfate, double-check your medications with your pharmacist if you're on any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs—vanadium may increase bleeding risk. Also check if you take any diabetes medications, since vanadium might lower your blood sugar too far.

These are Moderate-severity interactions that deserve a quick conversation.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're interested in vanadium for general health or athletic performance, the evidence doesn't yet support those uses. This supplement makes most sense if your doctor has identified a vanadium deficiency.

Anyone taking blood thinners or diabetes medications should check with their pharmacist first, as the interactions are real and potentially serious.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, vanadium might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that the sodium orthovanadate form of vanadium prolongs clotting time, likely through inhibition of thrombin and factor Xa.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, vanadium might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
A few very small clinical studies in patients with type 2 diabetes show that the vanadyl sulfate form of vanadium increases insulin sensitivity and might lower blood glucose levels.

Vanadyl Sulfate 2 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe: Common Questions

Does Vanadyl Sulfate 2 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Vanadyl Sulfate 2 mg has a known interaction with 208 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Vanadyl Sulfate 2 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is this dose safe, and how much vanadium is too much?
This 2 mg dose is at the upper limit of the daily intake most people tolerate well without side effects. Above 1.8 mg daily, stomach upset becomes more likely, and much higher doses taken long-term have been linked to kidney damage. Check with your pharmacist about what's right for you.
Will vanadium help me build muscle or improve my athletic performance?
The evidence isn't there yet. Athletic performance is rated insufficient evidence to rate, so we can't say whether vanadium actually works for that goal based on current data.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data advises against vanadium supplements during both pregnancy and breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your specific situation before taking it.
What does vanadium actually do in your body?
Vanadium is a trace mineral your body needs in very small amounts for normal function. Most people get enough from food, so deficiency is rare. At higher supplement doses, it may affect blood clotting and blood sugar—which is why the interactions matter.
What side effects might I experience?
At the 1.8 mg daily threshold and below, side effects are uncommon. Higher doses can trigger nausea, diarrhea, gas, and stomach discomfort. Allergic reactions like rashes or itchy eyes are rare but have been reported. If you notice any of these, stop and contact your pharmacist or doctor.
