Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: vanadium, supplied as vanadyl sulfate at 2 mg per tablet. Vanadium is a trace mineral your body needs in small amounts.

The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients—dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium, purified water, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and polyethylene glycol—which help form and stabilize the tablet.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Vanadium's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: glucose metabolism support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Diabetes, Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes), blood sugar regulation, insulin sensitivity.
  • The closest evidence on file: Vanadium is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Diabetes (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Vanadium is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes).

Vanadium is rated likely effective for vanadium deficiency, which is rare in people eating a typical diet. For athletic performance, diabetes, high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), and cancer, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate its effectiveness.

This means either very few studies exist, the studies are small, or the results don't yet point clearly in one direction.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

At or below the tolerable upper intake level of 1.8 mg daily, vanadium is generally well tolerated. This product is 2 mg, so it's slightly above that threshold.

At higher doses, the most common side effects are gastrointestinal—abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, gas, and nausea. Rare but serious adverse effects from long-term high-dose use include kidney damage.

Allergic reactions to vanadium, including rashes and contact dermatitis, have been reported in people exposed to vanadium metal or compounds. During pregnancy, the safety data advises against supplement doses of vanadium.

While breastfeeding, safety is unknown, so it's best to avoid vanadium supplements. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Vanadium.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 208 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take Vanadyl Sulfate 2 mg, double-check if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel)—vanadium may increase bleeding risk. Also confirm your diabetes medications with your doctor or pharmacist, since vanadium might lower blood glucose further and raise the risk of low blood sugar.

Vanadyl Sulfate 2 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe: Common Questions

Does Vanadyl Sulfate 2 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Vanadyl Sulfate 2 mg has a known interaction with 208 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Vanadyl Sulfate 2 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is 2 mg of vanadium safe to take daily?
The tolerable upper intake level is 1.8 mg daily, so this product is slightly above that. At or below 1.8 mg, vanadium is generally well tolerated. Doses above the upper limit may cause stomach upset, and long-term high-dose use carries a rare risk of kidney damage. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this dose is right for you.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data advises against vanadium supplements during pregnancy. While breastfeeding, safety is unknown, so it's best to avoid it. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist about your individual situation before taking this product.
Does vanadium actually work for diabetes?
A small number of very small clinical trials suggest vanadyl sulfate may help your body use insulin better and lower blood glucose in type 2 diabetes, but the overall evidence is insufficient to rate how well it works. More research is needed.
What are the side effects I should watch for?
The most common side effects at higher doses are gastrointestinal: belly discomfort, diarrhea, gas, and nausea. Allergic reactions like itchy rashes and contact dermatitis have been reported, though they're uncommon. If you notice any of these, stop taking it and talk with your pharmacist.
What is vanadium, and why would I need a supplement?
Vanadium is a trace mineral your body needs in tiny amounts, and it's found in food. Vanadium deficiency is rare. This supplement is most useful if you've been diagnosed with a deficiency by your doctor.
