Vision Refresh Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Nature's Way
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Vision Refresh against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Vision Refresh contains three active ingredients. Bilberry is a fruit extract traditionally used for vision support.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids — plant pigments that accumulate in the eye and are linked to visual health, especially as we age. The product also contains inactive ingredients: a plant-derived capsule, cellulose, and silica, which help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for this product is mixed. Lutein and zeaxanthin both have "Possibly Effective" ratings for age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, meaning there's some research backing their use for these eye conditions.
Bilberry, on the other hand, is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for night vision — the classic claim behind bilberry supplements isn't well supported. For bilberry's other proposed uses (cognitive decline, macular degeneration, cholesterol, and circulation), the evidence is either too limited or conflicting to rate it reliably.
So you're getting two ingredients with decent evidence for one purpose and one with weak evidence for its traditional purpose.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Bilberry fruit as food is safe, but supplement safety isn't as well studied, especially long-term. Most side effects are mild: dark or greenish stools, gas, and stomach discomfort are the most common complaints — a small number of people reported flatulence in trials.
You may also notice your tongue or teeth darken temporarily; this is harmless. Lutein and zeaxanthin at typical doses are generally well tolerated, with no adverse effects reported in studies of lutein up to 20 mg daily.
All three ingredients are rated "Likely Safe" in pregnancy and breastfeeding, though for lutein and zeaxanthin the safety data on higher supplement doses in these settings is limited.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (Moderate risk of increased bleeding), diabetes medications (Moderate risk of low blood sugar from both bilberry and zeaxanthin), drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP2E1, or the cancer medication erlotinib (Moderate risk of reduced effectiveness).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Vision Refresh may help with age-related eye conditions, especially if you're taking it for lutein and zeaxanthin's role in macular degeneration or cataracts. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or the cancer drug erlotinib, this product needs a medication check first — don't start it without running your prescriptions through our checker.

Vision Refresh by Nature's Way Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Vision Refresh by Nature's Way contains three active ingredients, two of which have documented interactions with medications.
Bilberry is the one to watch most closely — it may increase bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel), a Moderate-severity concern. The mechanism is that bilberry can slow down how platelets clump together.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Bilberry also has Moderate interactions with diabetes medications (it may lower blood sugar further, raising the risk of low blood sugar), drugs processed by a liver enzyme called CYP2E1, and the cancer drug erlotinib. Zeaxanthin, the third ingredient, carries a Moderate interaction with diabetes drugs for the same reason — it may add to their blood-sugar-lowering effect.
Lutein, the middle ingredient, has no known interactions documented in our data. Altogether, these interactions span 274 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Vision Refresh with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Bilberry
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro, animal, and clinical research suggest that anthocyanidin extracts from bilberry can inhibit platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, bilberry leaf or fruit extract may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that bilberry leaf extract might have blood glucose-lowering activity. Also, one small clinical trial in patients with type 2 diabetes shows that taking bilberry fruit extract 470 mg as a single dose prior to an oral glucose tolerance test lowers plasma glucose levels when compared with placebo.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1.
Animal research shows that exposure to small concentrations of bilberry extract in drinking water for around one month increased CYP2E1 activity by 31%. However, exposure over a 2-month period did not increase CYP2E1 activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Erlotinib (Tarceva)
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might reduce the efficacy of erlotinib.
In vitro research suggests that bilberry fruit extract and its constituents, delphinidin and delphinidin-3-O-glucoside, inhibit the activity of erlotinib. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Zeaxanthin Isomers
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
