Wild Cherry Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Wild Cherry against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Wild Cherry by Herb Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Each serving's active ingredient is wild cherry bark extract, and it is the only active ingredient listed for this product. The remaining components are inactive ingredients: distilled water, cane alcohol, and glycerin.
These inactive ingredients serve as the liquid base and do not provide the herbal effect.
Does it work?
Not established
We do not have reliable evidence to rate wild cherry for any of the uses we track. Our data rates it as insufficient reliable evidence for bronchitis, cancer, the common cold, cough, and diabetes.
That means the research we hold does not establish whether it works for these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Wild cherry is generally well tolerated in small amounts in commercial cough products, but the plant contains compounds that can form cyanide. Large amounts can lead to cyanide toxicity, which can be fatal, and one reported case involved a person who ate a large quantity of wild cherries steeped in alcohol.
Our pregnancy data rates it as likely unsafe, so the safety data advises against use during pregnancy. Our safety notes also advise against use while breastfeeding, because safety has not been established.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
The medication type to double-check is CYP3A4 substrates, which carries a Moderate severity rating in our data. Because wild cherry may affect how your liver clears these drugs, ask your own doctor or pharmacist to review any prescription you take before you start this product.
Check your exact medication names with the search tool on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Wild cherry may be of interest to people looking for a cough product, but our data does not show that it works for cough or any other use. If you take medications that your liver processes through CYP3A4, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk this over with your own doctor or pharmacist before using it.
Be careful with large amounts, since the plant contains cyanide-forming compounds.

Wild Cherry by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herb Pharm's Wild Cherry liquid can interact with some medications through its wild cherry bark extract, which is its only active ingredient.
The documented concern is with cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) substrates, a large group of drugs that your liver breaks down using the CYP3A4 enzyme system. This interaction is rated Moderate.
In laboratory research, wild cherry appears to inhibit those enzymes, which in theory could raise the levels of these drugs in your body. That interaction has not been reported in humans so far.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 646 individual medications. Lovastatin, ketoconazole, and itraconazole are examples of drugs in the CYP3A4 group.
Since the list is so broad, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before you start.

Wild Cherry Bark Extract
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
In vitro research suggests that wild cherry can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Theoretically, wild cherry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, so far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and others.
