Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Maqui's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Antioxidant superberry.
  • We looked for evidence on: Dry eye, Oxidative stress, Antioxidant defense, General wellness.
  • The closest evidence on file: Maqui is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Dry eye (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for maqui berry isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for dry eye, prediabetes, or psychological well-being.

If you're considering this for one of those uses, talk with your pharmacist about what the current research actually shows.

How safe is it?

Some data gaps
Safety Information · database check
Some gaps

Safety data exists for these ingredients, but with some important gaps.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 0 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Maqui berry in food amounts is likely well tolerated, but supplement safety hasn't been well studied. The safety data we hold advises against taking supplement amounts — there isn't enough information to know what risks might exist at this dose.

Pregnancy and lactation safety data isn't on file for maqui.

Meds to double-check

Minor interactions only
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Maqui.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take antidiabetes drugs, double-check this product first — maqui may increase your risk of low blood sugar.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and some safety-information gaps remain.

This is a single-ingredient product, which keeps things simple. If you take diabetes medication, you'll want to check with us before adding it.

Because supplement safety data is limited, talk with your pharmacist about whether it's right for you.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, maqui fruit extract may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research shows that maqui berry reduces fasting blood glucose. However, maqui berry extract taken orally, either as a single dose or daily for 3 months, does not decrease fasting blood glucose in prediabetic patients. It is unknown whether it might reduce blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes.
