HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Yogurt Starter Formula 2 by Custom Probiotics
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Yogurt Starter Formula 2 contains 5 active ingredients, all live bacterial cultures used in yogurt fermentation: B. lactis, L. acidophilus, S. thermophilus, L. lactis, and L. bulgaricus. These are probiotics — beneficial bacteria meant to support gut health and fermentation.
The product has no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for these cultures is mixed. L. acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, though the data are not conclusive.
For the other ingredients — S. thermophilus, L. lactis, and L. bulgaricus — we don't have enough evidence to rate their effectiveness in the conditions studied. B. lactis was not evaluated.
If you're considering this starter for a specific health goal, check with your pharmacist about what the science actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These live bacterial cultures are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, there is a theoretical concern that they might cause pathogenic infection in certain patients — particularly those who are severely ill, immunocompromised, or have indwelling catheters.
Oral use may cause mild gastrointestinal side effects like abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, or diarrhea, though these are uncommon. People with weakened immune systems should check with their doctor before use.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding safety data are limited for these supplements — food sources are generally considered acceptable, but talk to your healthcare provider about supplemental use during pregnancy or while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Take antibiotics at a different time than this product — the antibiotics may kill off the live cultures you're trying to introduce. Both L. acidophilus and L. bulgaricus are affected.
No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
