These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Acacia Rigidula interacts with whole categories of medication. Chlorpheniramine Maleate, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Acacia Rigidula in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Chlorpheniramine Maleate, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide
Chlorpheniramine Maleate, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Acacia Rigidula interacts with.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA, an adulterant found in many Acacia rigidula products, strongly inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for this cough and cold combo. Both the dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant) and, to a degree, the chlorpheniramine (the antihistamine) lean on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to be cleared from your body. Some Acacia rigidula products have been found spiked with a stimulant called BMPEA, and lab studies suggest BMPEA can block that enzyme. If it's blocked, these drugs may build up more than expected.
In real terms, that could mean stronger drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, or with higher dextromethorphan levels, feeling foggy, restless, or even agitated. Keep in mind this is theoretical, based only on test-tube work, not people. Still, mixing a stimulant supplement with a sedating cold product isn't a great idea. Please check with your pharmacist before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Chlorpheniramine Maleate, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA, an adulterant found in many Acacia rigidula products, inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme by 37%.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with this cough and cold combo. Some Acacia rigidula products have been found tainted with a hidden stimulant called BMPEA, and lab studies suggest it can mildly block the CYP3A4 enzyme. Your body uses that enzyme to help clear dextromethorphan, so in theory the dextromethorphan could build up a bit. That might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy. On top of that, the stimulant amines in this plant don't mix well with cough and cold medicines and can leave you jittery or raise your heart rate and blood pressure.
Keep in mind this is theoretical, based only on lab work, not real patients. Still, I'd skip the Acacia and check with your pharmacist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Chlorpheniramine Maleate, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide page
“Grapefruit is the interaction I would flag first for anyone taking chlorpheniramine with dextromethorphan (Coricidin HBP Cough & Cold). It blocks the enzyme that clears these ingredients, so levels and side effects can climb.”

About Acacia Rigidula
What is Acacia Rigidula?
- Weight loss
- Energy and stimulation
- Boosting metabolism
- Appetite control
- Pre-workout/athletic performance
Acacia rigidula is a shrub from Texas and Mexico that is marketed in weight-loss and energy supplements. There is very little reliable human evidence that it works, and some products have been found to contain an unapproved stimulant drug (BMPEA), which raises real safety concerns. Most people should avoid it and talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying any product containing it.
