Saquinavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Acacia Rigidula interacts with.

Theoretically, Acacia rigidula products that are adulterated with beta-methylphenylethylamine (BMPEA) might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA, an adulterant found in many Acacia rigidula products, inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme by 37%.

Here's the gist for saquinavir (Invirase). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this HIV medicine down. Some Acacia rigidula products have been found spiked with a stimulant called BMPEA, and lab studies suggest BMPEA can slow that enzyme down a bit. If the enzyme works slower, saquinavir could build up to higher levels than expected, which may mean more side effects like nausea, diarrhea, belly pain, or changes in your heart rhythm.

I'll be honest though, this is only based on test-tube research, not real patients, so it's theoretical. Still, with an HIV medication you don't want surprises in either direction. Since these products may also contain a hidden stimulant, I'd skip Acacia rigidula and run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Saquinavir Used For?

  • Saquinavir is used in combination with ritonavir (Norvir) and other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Saquinavir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although saquinavir does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people.
