Balsalazide Disodium falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel could grab onto a pill sitting in your gut and slow or reduce how much of it gets absorbed. With balsalazide, that's worth a thought, since this drug is actually designed to travel down to your colon, where gut bacteria break it apart and release mesalamine, the part that calms inflammation. If a fiber gel interferes with that delivery, you might theoretically get a bit less benefit, meaning your colitis symptoms (diarrhea, cramping, rectal bleeding) could be less well controlled.

That said, this is a theoretical, minor concern based on lab reasoning, not real-world reports. Food amounts of algin almost certainly don't matter. To play it safe with concentrated supplements, separate them by taking algin 30 to 60 minutes after your balsalazide, and check with your pharmacist first.

What Is Balsalazide Used For?

Brand names: Colazal, Giazo

Balsalazide disodium capsules (sold as Balsalazide Disodium and Colazal) are used to treat mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis — a condition where the lining of the colon becomes inflamed and causes symptoms like diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and abdominal pain. This use is approved for adults and for children ages 5 through 17.

The established treatment period is up to 8 weeks in children (ages 5–17) and up to 12 weeks in adults. Safety and effectiveness beyond those time frames have not been established in clinical trials.
