Baricitinib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with baricitinib (Olumiant) and algin. Algin is a soluble seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. Because it forms that gel, it could in theory grab onto a pill you swallow and slow or slightly lower how much of your baricitinib gets absorbed. If less drug gets in, your arthritis, alopecia, or other symptoms might not be controlled as well. Baricitinib is not a prodrug, so this is purely an absorption question, not a metabolism one.

Honestly, this is theoretical and rated minor, based on lab work rather than real patient reports. Food amounts are unlikely to matter. To be safe, a simple fix is spacing them: take your baricitinib first, then algin 30 to 60 minutes later. Run it by your pharmacist if you use algin regularly.

What Is Baricitinib Used For?

Brand name: Olumiant

Olumiant (baricitinib) tablets are approved for three conditions in adults. It treats moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis in people who haven't responded well enough to one or more TNF blocker medications. It also treats severe alopecia areata (significant hair loss from an autoimmune condition).

Olumiant is additionally approved to treat COVID-19 in hospitalized adults who need supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, or ECMO (a machine that does the work of the heart and lungs). Each use has specific limitations — for example, Olumiant should not be combined with other JAK inhibitors or certain strong immunosuppressants for rheumatoid arthritis or alopecia areata.
