Clopidogrel falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the situation with Plavix (clopidogrel) and algin. Algin is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel could grab onto a pill sitting in your gut and slow down or reduce how much of it gets absorbed. This concern is mostly based on lab work and how the fiber behaves, not on real-world reports in people taking clopidogrel, so I'd file it under possible but minor.

Clopidogrel is a prodrug, meaning your body has to absorb and then activate it before it can thin your blood. If algin trims how much you absorb, you could get a little less of that clot-preventing effect. To stay safe, a simple fix helps: take your clopidogrel first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any algin. If you're unsure, check with your pharmacist.

What Is Clopidogrel Used For?

Brand name: Plavix

Clopidogrel tablets are used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — including unstable angina and non-ST-elevation or ST-elevation heart attacks — and in people with a history of recent heart attack, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. For ACS, it is typically given alongside aspirin.

It works by preventing platelets (blood cells that trigger clotting) from clumping together, which helps keep arteries open and lowers the chance of a dangerous clot forming.
