Sofosbuvir, Velpatasvir falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version. Algin is a seaweed-based soluble fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. Because it can physically trap things, there's a theoretical worry that taking it at the same time as a swallowed medicine could slow or reduce how much of that medicine you absorb. With Epclusa (sofosbuvir/velpatasvir), the concern would be getting a little less of the drug into your system, and since this combo treats hepatitis C, you really want full, reliable absorption for the best shot at clearing the virus.

To be honest, this is a low-level, lab-based concern, not something proven in people. Food amounts of algin are unlikely to matter. A safe habit is spacing them out: take your Epclusa first, then any algin product 30 to 60 minutes later. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist.

What Is Sofosbuvir and Velpatasvir Used For?

Brand name: Epclusa

Sofosbuvir and velpatasvir treats chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection caused by genotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 — covering all the major strains. It is approved for adults and children 3 years of age and older, whether or not they have cirrhosis (liver scarring).

It is used on its own in patients without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis (where the liver is scarred but still functioning). In patients with decompensated cirrhosis (more advanced liver disease where the liver is no longer coping), it is used in combination with another medicine called ribavirin. Epclusa is a brand that is also available as oral pellets for younger children.
