Here's the wrinkle with this particular combo. The aloe we're talking about is aloe latex, the yellow part taken by mouth as a strong laxative, not the soothing skin gel. Used too often, that latex can flush potassium out of your body. On paper, that could add to the potassium loss from the hydrochlorothiazide side of your pill, possibly leaving you low on potassium (hypokalemia), which can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat.

The good news: your medication also contains amiloride, a potassium-sparing diuretic that actually helps hold onto potassium, so it partly counterbalances this. This concern is also theoretical, based on how things work rather than real cases. Skin gel and small food amounts aren't the issue. Still, run any oral aloe past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
