American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Benazepril — sold as Lotensin and under its generic names Benazepril and Benazepril Hydrochloride — is approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like stroke and heart attack.

It can be used on its own or combined with a thiazide diuretic (water pill) when blood pressure needs more control. Because high blood pressure management is part of overall heart health, your doctor may also address cholesterol, blood sugar, and lifestyle factors alongside this medication.
