Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
Nephrotoxic Drugs
Why this applies to Captopril, Hydrochlorothiazide
Captopril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under Nephrotoxic Drugs — the group Asian Water Plantain interacts with.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the simple version: your Capozide already asks your kidneys to do some heavy lifting. The hydrochlorothiazide pulls extra water and salt out through your urine, and the captopril changes how blood flows through the kidneys. Asian water plantain (Ze Xie) has been used as a water pill too, and in very high-dose animal studies it showed signs of kidney stress, like rising BUN levels.
The good news: this is rated a minor and unlikely concern, and those animal doses were far beyond what a person would take. Still, stacking two things that lean on the kidneys, plus the extra fluid loss from a diuretic, could in theory nudge you toward dehydration, dizziness, or changes in kidney numbers. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your blood pressure medicine on your own.

About Asian Water Plantain
What is Asian Water Plantain?
- Promoting urination (diuretic)
- Fluid retention and swelling
- Urinary discomfort
- Cholesterol and heart health support
- Kidney and bladder support
Asian water plantain (Ze Xie) is a rhizome long used in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly as a diuretic and for fluid retention. Modern evidence is mostly limited to laboratory and animal studies, so its benefits in people are not well proven, and quality human safety data are lacking. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Captopril and Hydrochlorothiazide
What Is Captopril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?
Brand names: Capozide, Acezide
Captopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The two ingredients work together to lower blood pressure more effectively than either one alone — their effects are approximately additive.
The combination tablet may be used as a starting treatment or substituted when a patient has already been stabilized on the individual ingredients separately. It is generally suitable for patients with normal kidney function; patients with impaired kidney function should only use it when other treatments haven't worked or have caused unacceptable side effects.
