Indinavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Astaxanthin interacts with.

Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for indinavir (Crixivan). Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to process this HIV medicine. In lab dish studies, astaxanthin seems to speed that enzyme up. If that were to happen in real life, your body could clear indinavir a little faster, which might lower the drug's blood levels. With an HIV medicine, weaker levels are a real concern because they can let the virus rebound and even encourage resistance.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is only test-tube and cell data, and it has not been seen in actual people. So it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, because keeping HIV controlled matters so much, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding astaxanthin.

What Is Indinavir Used For?

  • Indinavir is used along with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Indinavir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although indinavir does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people.
