Losartan Potassium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Astaxanthin interacts with.

Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the wrinkle with losartan (Cozaar): it's actually a prodrug. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 (along with another one) to turn losartan into its more active form, which does most of the blood-pressure-lowering work. So the enzyme isn't just clearing this drug, it's partly switching it on.

In lab dish studies, astaxanthin seemed to speed up CYP3A4. In theory, a faster enzyme could shift how much active drug forms, which makes the real-world effect on your blood pressure hard to predict. The important thing to know is this has only been seen in test tubes, never in actual people, so it's a weak, theoretical concern. Still, if you take losartan and want to try astaxanthin, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

Astaxanthin is a reddish carotenoid pigment with strong antioxidant activity in the lab, and it is widely promoted for skin, eye, heart, and exercise benefits. Early human studies are promising for a few uses, but the overall evidence is still limited and not strong enough to make firm claims. It appears generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
