Fexofenadine falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP) — the group Banaba interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of banaba with substrates of OATP might reduce the bioavailability of the OATP substrate.
In vitro research shows that banaba inhibits OATP, particularly OATP2B1. OATPs are expressed in the small intestine and liver and are responsible for the absorption of drugs and other compounds.

Here's the gist with Allegra (fexofenadine). Your body relies on little transporter proteins called OATPs (especially one named OATP2B1) in your gut to help absorb this drug into your bloodstream. Lab studies suggest banaba may block those transporters. If less fexofenadine gets absorbed, you could end up with less of it working, which might mean your allergy symptoms (runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, hives) aren't controlled as well.

The good news: this is only theoretical, based on test-tube research, not human studies. We don't actually know if it matters in real life. Fexofenadine isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't get more potent here, just potentially weaker. If you take both and notice your allergies acting up, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Fexofenadine Used For?

Brand name: Allegra

Fexofenadine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and other upper respiratory allergies, including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

Several products — including Allegra Hives 24hr tablets — are specifically used to reduce hives (urticaria) and relieve the itching that comes with them. Keep in mind that fexofenadine will not prevent hives or stop an allergic skin reaction from happening in the first place.
