Here's the simple version: enalapril (Vasotec) already lowers your blood pressure, and there's a chance that basil could nudge it down a little further. The thinking is that basil's plant compounds may relax blood vessels too, so stacking the two could add up.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This is only a theoretical concern based on animal studies, not real patients, and the basil in your pasta or pesto is very unlikely to do anything. The question is really about concentrated basil supplements or basil essential oil. If you took those alongside enalapril, watch for signs your pressure dropped too far: dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand, fatigue, or feeling faint. If that happens, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Enalapril

What Is Enalapril Used For?

Brand names: Vasotec, Epaned

Enalapril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children older than one month, and to treat symptomatic heart failure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

It is also used for asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction — when the heart's pumping ability is reduced but the person doesn't yet have obvious heart failure symptoms — to slow the progression to overt heart failure and reduce hospitalizations. Enalapril maleate oral solution (including Epaned) and enalapril maleate tablets (including Vasotec) share these three approved uses.
