Beet and Agomelatine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Agomelatine

Agomelatine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Beet interacts with.

Theoretically, beet might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that beet induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for agomelatine (Valdoxan), the antidepressant you take at night. Your body relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP1A2 to break this drug down. The concern on file is that beet might speed that enzyme up a bit, which could clear agomelatine out of your system faster and leave you with a weaker effect. In plain terms, your sleep and mood support from the medicine might not work quite as well.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical worry based only on lab studies, not on real people, and it's rated minor. Eating beets or having a normal serving of beetroot juice is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you plan to use concentrated beet supplements daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Beet

What is Beet?

Beet
  • High blood pressure
  • Exercise and athletic performance
  • Heart and circulation support
  • General antioxidant/anti-inflammatory support
  • Liver and digestive support

Beet, especially beetroot juice, is a nitrate-rich food that may modestly lower blood pressure and slightly improve exercise performance in some people. It is generally safe as a food, but supplement effects are modest and not a substitute for prescribed treatment, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before relying on it.
