Beet + Dapsone
Dapsone brand names: Dapsone, Avlosulfon, Aczone.
Beet has a moderate interaction with Dapsone. Theoretically, beet might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Dapsone
Dapsone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Beet interacts with.
In vitro research suggests that betanin, the major pigment in beet, competitively inhibits CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner similarly to strong CYP3A4 inhibitor ketoconazole.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down dapsone. Lab studies (test tube only) suggest that betanin, the red pigment in beets, can slow that same enzyme much like a known blocker would. In theory, that could let a little more dapsone build up in your system than usual.
If that happened, you might notice more of dapsone's typical side effects, things like headache, fatigue, or in some people changes tied to its effect on red blood cells (paleness, shortness of breath, or yellowing of the skin). I want to be honest though: this is only based on cell studies, not real patients, so the actual risk is uncertain. Eating beets in normal food amounts is unlikely to be a problem. Before using concentrated beetroot supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dapsone page
“Dapsone treats serious conditions, from dermatitis herpetiformis to leprosy, and its supplement list is one I'd want a patient to read closely rather than skim. Most entries touch how the body handles dapsone through the CYP3A4 enzyme, so grapefruit can raise its blood level while St.”

About Beet
What is Beet?
- High blood pressure
- Exercise and athletic performance
- Heart and circulation support
- General antioxidant/anti-inflammatory support
- Liver and digestive support
Beet, especially beetroot juice, is a nitrate-rich food that may modestly lower blood pressure and slightly improve exercise performance in some people. It is generally safe as a food, but supplement effects are modest and not a substitute for prescribed treatment, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before relying on it.
