Beet and Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate and Beet in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Beet safety at a glance

Beet overall Generally safe Beet is widely eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated for most adults.
Pregnancy Use caution Beet as a food is fine, but concentrated supplements lack safety data, so use caution.
Breastfeeding Use caution Beet as a food is fine, but there is not enough data on concentrated supplements.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate is filed under 4 classifications — including nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (nrtis), nephrotoxic drugs, oral drugs. Beet has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates (moderate), antihypertensive drugs (minor) and cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates (minor) — and none of Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

Overlapping uses

What Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Is Prescribed For, and What Beet Has Been Studied For

These two come up together because they touch the same health topic — not because they do the same job. Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate is a prescription medicine with approved uses on its FDA label. Beet is a supplement: what follows is what researchers have looked at it for, and how strong that evidence is.

Beet has been studied for:

  • Liver disease studied, not established Beet has been studied for this. Natural Medicines rates the evidence: Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Read what the research shows

    Beet for liver disease

Although there has been interest in using oral beet for liver disease, there is insufficient reliable information about the clinical effects of beet for this purpose.

Effectiveness ratings and the research summaries above are the verbatim record from the Natural Medicines database, which grades evidence from “Effective” down to “Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate”. A rating below the top of that scale means researchers have looked at it — not that it works, and never that it can stand in for a prescribed medicine. Do not stop or replace Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate on your own; if you are taking Beet for the same health topic, tell your prescriber, especially if the medicine is being adjusted to a target.

About Beet

What is Beet?

Beet
  • High blood pressure
  • Exercise and athletic performance
  • Heart and circulation support
  • General antioxidant/anti-inflammatory support
  • Liver and digestive support

Beet, especially beetroot juice, is a nitrate-rich food that may modestly lower blood pressure and slightly improve exercise performance in some people. It is generally safe as a food, but supplement effects are modest and not a substitute for prescribed treatment, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before relying on it.

Beta vulgaris · Amaranthaceae · Root and leaves (greens) · Juice, powder, capsules, tablets, whole food, concentrated shots, gels

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Beet is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Beet record says about it on its own.

Beet: dosing

There is no official standardized dose of beet for supplement use. Studies have used a range of amounts of beetroot juice or powder, often based on nitrate content, but the best dose is not firmly established. If you choose a beet supplement, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount.

About Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/Tenofovir alafenamide

What Is Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/Tenofovir alafenamide Used For?

Brand name: Viread

  • Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (DF) (Viread) is used along with other medications to treat HIV infection in adults and children 2 years of age and older weighing 22 pounds (10 kilograms) or more. Tenofovir DF is also used to treat chronic (long term) HBV in adults and children 2 years of age and older weighing 22 pounds (10 kilograms) or more. Tenofovir alafenamide (AF) (Vemlidy) is used to treat chronic (long term) HBV in adults and children 12 years of age and older who have stable liver disease. Tenofovir is in a class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It works by decreasing the amount of HIV and HBV in the blood. Although tenofovir will not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people. Tenofovir will not cure hepatitis B and may not prevent complications of chronic hepatitis B such as cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. Tenofovir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis B to other people.
