Amlodipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Berberine interacts with.

Theoretically, berberine might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research suggests that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, a clinical study suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone.

Here's the simple version: berberine on its own can nudge your blood pressure down a bit, and amlodipine already relaxes your blood vessels to lower it. Put them together and those effects may stack up. In fact, one small study found that people taking berberine plus amlodipine had slightly lower top and bottom blood pressure numbers than amlodipine alone.

Most of the evidence here comes from animal work and one human study, so this is more of a gentle, additive effect than a dangerous one. Still, if your pressure drops too far you might notice dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, or swollen ankles. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can watch your numbers.

Amlodipine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, berberine might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, use of berberine with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 might increase drug levels and increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the simple version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down amlodipine and clear it out. Berberine appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. When the cleanup crew works slower, more amlodipine can hang around in your blood than expected.

Since amlodipine is already an active drug (not one that needs activating), more of it usually means a stronger blood-pressure-lowering effect. In practice that could show up as dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand, flushing, headache, or swelling in your ankles. The good news is this concern is mostly theoretical and the effect is modest, so it's not a reason to panic. Still, before adding a berberine supplement, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially if your blood pressure already runs low.

What Is Amlodipine Used For?

Brand name: Norliqva

Amlodipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6–17 years. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Sdamlo (oral solution) is specifically indicated for hypertension in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

Amlodipine also treats coronary artery disease in adults, including chronic stable angina (chest pain with exertion), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina, caused by coronary artery spasms), and documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or significantly reduced heart pumping function.
