Why this applies to Aspirin, Butalbital

Theoretically, berberine might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and in vivo research suggest that berberine can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, berberine might have additive effects when used with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs and increase the risk of bleeding.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Axotal is a combo product, and the part that matters here is the aspirin. Aspirin already thins your blood a bit by making your platelets less sticky, which is why it can lead to easy bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach irritation. Lab and animal studies suggest berberine may also slow platelet clumping, so stacking the two could, in theory, add up to a higher bleeding risk.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this is theoretical and comes from test-tube and animal research, not solid human studies, so it is not a reason to panic. Still, watch for unusual bruising, bleeding gums, or dark stools, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding berberine. Don't stop anything on your own.
