Atomoxetine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Berberine interacts with.

Theoretically, berberine might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, use of berberine with drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 might increase drug levels and increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the simple version: your body clears atomoxetine (Strattera) mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Berberine appears to slow that same enzyme down. So if you take them together, the worry is that atomoxetine could clear out more slowly and build up in your blood, making both its effects and its side effects stronger.

For atomoxetine, that might look like a faster heart rate, higher blood pressure, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, decreased appetite, or feeling jittery. Keep in mind this is based on lab work and only early human evidence, so it's a possible, not certain, problem. Concentrated berberine supplements are the concern here, not occasional small amounts. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Atomoxetine Used For?

Brand name: Strattera

Atomoxetine — available as capsules (Atomoxetine, Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Strattera) and as an oral solution (Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Atoncy) — is approved for the treatment of ADHD in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older. It is meant to be part of a total treatment program that may also include psychological, educational, and social supports.

ADHD is diagnosed when persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity cause meaningful problems in daily life — at school, at work, or at home — in more than one setting. Atomoxetine is not approved to treat major depressive disorder.
