Berberine and Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Berberine interacts with whole categories of medication. Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Berberine in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

1 of 3

Why this applies to Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan

Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Berberine interacts with.

Theoretically, berberine might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research suggests that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, a clinical study suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Byvalson combines two blood pressure medicines: nebivolol, a beta-blocker, and valsartan, which relaxes your blood vessels. Both are designed to bring your blood pressure down. Berberine, in animal studies and one small human study, also showed a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect. So the concern here is simply additive: stacking berberine on top of Byvalson could push your numbers lower than expected.

If that happens, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, unusually tired, or faint when standing up quickly. Keep in mind this is theoretical and based mostly on weak evidence, so it is not a reason to panic. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting berberine, and if you do, watch your blood pressure at home.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Nebivolol Hydrochloride, Valsartan also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, berberine might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, use of berberine with drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 might increase drug levels and increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Byvalson combines two medicines, and the part that matters here is nebivolol, a beta-blocker that your body clears mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Berberine appears to slow that enzyme down. So in theory, taking the two together could let nebivolol build up a bit more than usual, which may push its effects a little stronger.

What might that feel like? Possibly a lower-than-expected heart rate, more lightheadedness or dizziness, tiredness, or blood pressure that dips too far. I want to be honest that this is mostly theoretical and based on limited evidence, so it may never cause you trouble. Still, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before starting berberine so they can keep an eye on your pulse and blood pressure.

Byvalson combines two blood pressure medicines: nebivolol (a beta-blocker) and valsartan. The valsartan part is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, and early research suggests berberine can slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let valsartan build up a little higher than usual. If that happened, you might notice your blood pressure dropping more than expected, leaving you dizzy, lightheaded, or unusually tired. Both ingredients can already lower blood pressure on their own, so this is worth keeping in mind.

Honestly, this is mostly a theoretical concern based on limited evidence, so don't panic. Still, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding berberine, and let them know if you feel faint or worn out.
