Butorphanol falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Biofeedback interacts with.

There is some concern that electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback might lower the seizure threshold in some patients. Theoretically, combining EEG biofeedback with seizure threshold-lowering drugs might increase the risk of seizure.
Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's what's going on with butorphanol (Stadol) and biofeedback. This isn't about your body breaking down the drug. Instead, it's about seizure risk. Opioid pain medicines like butorphanol can slightly lower the seizure threshold, meaning the brain becomes a touch more prone to a seizure. There's also a theoretical concern that one specific type of biofeedback, EEG (brainwave) biofeedback, might do the same thing in certain people.

Put together, the worry is a small, theoretical bump in seizure risk, not a sure thing. The evidence here is limited, and most people won't run into trouble. Still, if you're using EEG biofeedback and getting butorphanol, mention it to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a seizure history. Other forms of biofeedback (muscle, heart rate) aren't really the concern.

About Butorphanol Injection

What Is Butorphanol Injection Used For?

Brand name: Stadol

Butorphanol Tartrate Injection is used to manage pain severe enough to require an opioid when other treatments are not adequate. It is also used as a preoperative or pre-anesthetic medication and as a supplement to balanced anesthesia during surgical procedures.

Butorphanol Tartrate Injection is also indicated for relief of pain during labor in patients at full term in early labor. Because of serious risks including addiction, misuse, and overdose, it is reserved for situations where alternative treatments are ineffective or not tolerated.
