Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ETHINYL ESTRADIOL
Why this applies to Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol
Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under ETHINYL ESTRADIOL — the group Black Psyllium interacts with.
Concurrent use of blond psyllium with ethinyl estradiol results in a slight increase in the extent of ethinyl estradiol absorption and a slower rate of absorption. This is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Good news here: this one is mostly theoretical and very mild. The patch you're using (Ortho Evra) delivers ethinyl estradiol and norelgestromin through your skin, so it actually skips your digestive tract almost entirely. That matters because psyllium's fiber gel does its work in the gut. The interaction on file was studied with the swallowed (oral) form of ethinyl estradiol, where fiber slightly nudged how much got absorbed. Even there, the change was tiny and considered unlikely to matter.
Because you're absorbing your hormones through the patch, psyllium shouldn't meaningfully affect your birth control. You don't need to worry about weaker protection or extra side effects from this combo. Still, it never hurts to mention your supplements to your pharmacist so they can double-check everything fits your situation.
