Why this applies to Panobinostat

Panobinostat falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Black Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin. Although many of these studies evaluated blond psyllium, the fiber content in black psyllium may have similar effects.

Here's the simple version: because black psyllium forms a thick gel when it mixes with water, that gel can grab onto pills sitting in your gut and change how much medicine your body actually absorbs. With Panobinostat (Farydak), the concern is that the fiber could slightly lower or alter how much of your dose gets into your bloodstream. That matters because this is a serious cancer medicine where getting the right amount counts.

To be honest, this is mostly theoretical and based on weaker evidence, not strong studies on Panobinostat itself. A practical fix is spacing them out: take your Panobinostat first, then your psyllium about 30 to 60 minutes later. Please don't change anything on your own. Check with your oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Panobinostat Used For?

Brand name: Farydak

  • Panobinostat is used in combination with bortezomib (Velcade) and dexamethasone to treat people with multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) who have already been treated two other medications, including bortezomib (Velcade). Panobinostat is in a class of medications called histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. It works by killing cancer cells.
