Clinical research suggests that blood irradiation therapy may stimulate immune function in some patients. Theoretically, concurrent use of blood irradiation therapy might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the idea behind this one: blood irradiation therapy (exposing your blood to UV or laser light) is thought to rev up parts of the immune system. Cisplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy that works partly by being toxic to fast-growing cells, and it can also dampen the immune system. So in theory, a treatment that stimulates immunity could pull in the opposite direction of what's intended during chemo.

Be honest with yourself about how thin this evidence is. This concern is theoretical, based on how the two are thought to act, not on solid studies in people on cisplatin. Cisplatin already carries real risks like kidney damage, nausea, hearing changes, and low blood counts, so before adding any light-based blood therapy, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

What Is Cisplatin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Platinol-AQ

Cisplatin Injection is used to treat three types of cancer. For metastatic testicular tumors and metastatic ovarian tumors, it is used as part of combination chemotherapy — alongside other approved cancer medicines — in patients who have already had surgery and/or radiation therapy. For metastatic ovarian tumors, it can also be used alone as a second-line treatment when standard chemotherapy has stopped working and cisplatin has not been tried before.

For advanced bladder cancer (specifically transitional cell bladder cancer) that can no longer be treated with surgery or radiation, Cisplatin Injection is used as a single agent.
