Why this applies to Darunavir

Darunavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bog Labrador Tea interacts with.

In vitro research shows that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Bog Labrador tea leaves can increase the concentration of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Extracts obtained from different geographical regions in Quebec resulted in differing potency of CYP3A4 induction. Bog Labrador tea might increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), amiodarone (Cordarone), ticagrelor (Brilinta), triazolam (Halcion), and others.

Here's the thing to know about darunavir (Prezista): your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to handle it, and this HIV medicine needs to stay at a steady, high enough level in your blood to keep the virus suppressed. That's actually why it's always paired with a booster like ritonavir or cobicistat, which slow that enzyme down on purpose.

Lab studies suggest Bog Labrador tea may push CYP3A4 to work faster, which could lower your darunavir levels and, in theory, let HIV bounce back over time. The catch is that this evidence comes only from test-tube and animal work, not people, so it's far from proven. Still, with a drug this important, I wouldn't take chances. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using this tea.

Bog Labrador tea is a wetland shrub whose leaves have long been brewed as a traditional beverage and folk remedy, especially among Indigenous peoples of North America. There is very little human research to confirm any health benefit, and the plant is closely related to species that contain toxic compounds, so it should be used cautiously and in moderation. About Darunavir

What Is Darunavir Used For?

Brand name: Prezista

Darunavir treats HIV-1 infection in adults and in children who are at least 3 years old and weigh at least 10 kg (about 22 lbs). It is not a cure for HIV, but it is used as part of a combination antiretroviral regimen to control the virus.

Darunavir must always be taken together with ritonavir — that pairing is required for darunavir to work properly. Both Prezista (brand name) and generic darunavir tablets are approved for this use. Prezista is also available as an oral suspension, which is particularly useful for younger or smaller patients.
